Building Your Practice Foundation: Are You In Action or Motion?

Have you gone fishing before?

If so, picture yourself on that dock, boat, or bridge right now. If not, close your eyes and imagine what fishing is like.

Picture this: It’s 7AM, you’re at your favorite spot on the creek. It’s cool with a light breeze in the air. You have your favorite rod, and you’ve just put a live worm on the hook. You cast as far out as you can in front of you and sit back, waiting for a bite.

A few minutes later… No bites. So, you recast your line not so far out and to the right.

A few minutes later… You feel your line tug, but nothing catches.

You reel your line back in and switch to a shiny feather. You cast it back to the same place. Still, no bites.

You switch to smaller worm and cast softly to the left.

Within minutes… you’ve got a fish on your hook! You reel it in, smile, throw the fish back, and cast again.

So, why am I talking about fishing to my clinicians? Here’s why:

The most common mistake I see in entrepreneurs is staying in “motion” instead of taking “action.” James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, explains it like this, “When you’re in motion, you’re planning and strategizing and learning. Those are all good things, but they don’t produce a result. Action, on the other hand, is the type of behavior that will deliver an outcome.

Here's some examples…

  • If I outline 10 ideas for social media content I want to create, that’s motion. If I actually create and post an article, that’s action.

  • If I post in a Facebook group about my private practice and share my offerings, that’s motion. If someone books a nutrition counseling session, that’s action.

  • If I research on how to hire on a contract dietitian and post a job, that’s motion. If I hire a PRN RD, that’s action.

  • If I attend a provider networking event and pass out my business cards, that’s motion. If I receive a referral from someone at the event, that’s action.

  • If I plan a 12-week support group for diabetes clients, that’s motion. If announce the event and someone signs up, that’s action.

Sometimes motion is helpful, but motion on its own will NEVER produce an outcome. It doesn’t matter how many books you read on business development or courses you take on growing your practice, this motion itself will never build your business. The action that will grow your practice are acquiring new clients, retaining clients, expanding your services, producing valuable content, and hiring employees.

Right now – Are you in motion? Or are you taking action?

Your action starts now!

Here’s some examples how to execute on today’s action:

  1. Create and post a post on social media.

  2. Write and publish an article.

  3. Apply to become an in-network provider with an insurance company.

  4. Ask and receive a 5-star client review.

  5. Announce a client or provider networking event you want to host.

  6. Release a new self-pay service.

Simply pick an action, pick a time, make it public, and make it happen today.

Yes, you heard me. Today. We’re going to hit the ground running!

PS: If you’re thinking of choosing the action of something that’s already in your plan today (like having that scheduled counseling session and billing for it), think again. Pick something that’s been in motion for you, but you haven’t taken action on it yet.
